Thomas was introduced to Tom Watson at an opening held at The Craftsman's Guild in San Francisco, Ca. Tom proceeded to tell him about a project that he was doing involving paintings of people working at traditional crafts. He had already gotten a chef, sheep shearer and cobbler and wanted to know if Thomas would be interested in having him come over and take photos of him at work that he could then use to do the paintings from. Thomas agreed and Tom came over a number of times in the late fall of 1996 to photograph and watch him work. A year later he saw the painting and was very impressed by it and thought it would be a good representation for this site.
